One Million Votes Targeted by Independence First
Independence First, the campaign for a referendum on Scottish Independence,
has radically stepped up their campaign by agreeing an ambitious effort to
affect the next Scottish Elections. Independence First activist Kevin
Williamson, speaking at IF’s AGM in Edinburgh (19th March) said: “In the 299
years that has passed since the Act of Union was imposed upon Scotland in
1707, the people of Scotland have never once been consulted directly on the
democratic legitimacy of the Union, nor on the alternative of full
Independence.”
“There are times however, when a window of opportunity opens that could
lead directly to such a consultation on Independence. Such a window of
opportunity presents itself on 3rd May 2007, the date of the Scottish
Parliamentary elections, and within the 300th anniversary of the
Act of Union itself.”
“Currently, 42 of the 129 MSP’s at Holyrood have stated they are
pro-Independence and would support a referendum on Scottish Independence. In
order to help elect a minimum of 65 Independence-supporting MSP’s on 1st May
2007 Independence First will be initiating a broad, non party aligned vote
independence campaign which targets the 2007 Scottish Parliamentary
election.”
“The nature of this campaign will be to convince a minimum of one million
Scots to pledge both of their votes – for FPTP Seats and for List Seats to
candidates who support a referendum on Scottish Independence. The target
figure of One Million Pledges represents over half the total number of
voters who participated in the 2003 Scottish Parliamentary election.”
“Independence First will be approaching other pro-independence
organisations, such as the Independence Convention, about working together
to build momentum behind the campaign. Soon, our people will realise that
Independence is very much within their grasp.”
Independence First have already approached the Independence Convention
with the campaign plan (which is being circulated around the convention's
membership at the moment) and are hoping for a star studded launch event
later in the year involving important cultural figures.
